Structural steel
RFP bullet 4 (either bridge) noted that any structural steel to concrete interface shall be detailed and/or protected such that no rust staining of the concrete occurs. Structural manual provided method to control stain but it is unclear how rust free at concrete is achievable. At the SDR, for aesthetic purposes, pier cap is removed, and typical for rust groove cannot be applied. Can the Ministry provide acceptable rust control/elimination method at concrete? i.e. groove at individual column, sealer, drip tap, or a combination of such to be acceptable methods. or please clarify the requirement and provide reference/example of approved methods.

The following provisions will be considered adequate to control the appearance of rust staining: • Drip tabs shall be used at all substructure elements located downstream of a drip path in accordance with Section 8.8.1 of the structural manual. • Bearing seat slopes and rust control grooves shall be detailed at semi-integral abutments in accordance with Figure 5.3.1 of the Structural Manual. • Bearing seat (top of column) slopes, bearing seat rust control grooves and a pair of vertical rust control grooves, analogous to those shown in Figure 6.3.2a of the Structural Manual, shall be used at all pier columns. At piers, vertical grooves shall be oriented away from the bridge elevation view to minimize visibility to motorists. • Rust staining in the purpose-designed grooves is acceptable.
