In reference to Sheet 246, Note 6. Piles to be driven to ultimate geotechnical resistance of 3,100 kN per pile but must be driven to or below elevation 205m, and Amendment to OPSS 903 Clause 903.04.02.04.01.1 and 903.07.02.01, as well as the geotechnical information. 1) Should pre-augering be mandatory for all contractors in order to install piles to elevation 205m? This requires driving through approximately 17m of soil exceeding ‘N’ Values of 100. 2) If piles are damaged during driving, will MTO be responsible for replacement of piles and/or any necessary pre-augering in order for contractors to install piles to elevation 205m? 3) Will pre-augering of obstructions be considered an extra to the contract? What about pre-augering of hard ground (see above), if applicable. 4) Spec 903.07.02.01 states “If a pile encounters practical refusal at a higher elevation than the design pile tip elevation, the Contractor shall notify the Contract Administrator (CA).” What procedure will the MTO require going forward? Is the contractor expected to continue driving at risk of damaging the piles to reach design tip elevation? Will the CA be responsible for testing and acceptance of piles above design tip elevation? If piles are acceptable above design tip elevation, is there a minimum pile embedment length that the contractor would be required to drive to? 5) Will standby rates for pre-augering equipment be paid to the contractor?
