MUP Expansion Joint
Enquiry
Could you please clarify MTO’s requirements with regard to the expansion joint at the end of the approach slab and the MUP? In particular: a) Is the seal to be continuous right through? b) Is the top surface to be treated similar to a sidewalk with the checkered plate as per sidewalk requirements? c) Is there a need for an upturn at the TL-4 parapet walls for the MUP? d) If the upturn is required, is it required on both sides? If yes, it will not fit and an alternative design standard will be required. If no, what treatment is required for the MUP barriers at the expansion joint locations?

Response
a) Seal does not have to be continuous. Due to different elevations of deck and MUP, the seal can be discontinuous at the MUP barriers. The design of sleeper slab shall accommodate the drainage requirement at MUP barriers. b) Yes. The requirements shall be the same as for sidewalk. c) Yes. Upturn is required on both sides of the parapets. d) The Design-Builder shall design the expansion joints to suit the structure geometry.
