Railway Cross-Section and Clearance at CPR Structure
Section of the RFP states “the design-builder shall confirm recommendations made in the PDR and in accordance with the following requirements for each site..” and for the CPR structure requirements it states “the horizontal and vertical clearances shall satisfy the requirements of the Geometric Design Standards for Ontario Highways and the Guelph Junction Railway”. Based on the RFP documents it is not clear what the requirements of the Guelph Junction Railway are. There is no mention of the 2 additional ‘proposed’ tracks shown on the CPR Overhead Preliminary General Arrangement in the RFP document, the main PDR (Table C-1 Document No.2) or the SDR (Table C-1 Document 9-1). The RFP is silent on required rail cross section other than that shown on the Preliminary General Arrangement, which the Design-builder is asked to confirm. In order to define the scope of this bridge replacement, please confirm that: a) The new structure shall be long enough to span 3 tracks (1 existing and 2 proposed) b) The centre to centre spacing of the tracks required is 4.267m. c) The distance from the centre of the outside track to the face of the abutment is 5.486m, (and that the Guelph Junction Railway does not require a future maintenance road along the corridor, which would increase this distance).

The span of the new structure shall not be less than what is shown on the Preliminary General Arrangement drawing. The span shall accommodate the existing track plus two proposed tracks, one to the east and one to the west of the existing track, and shall meet or exceed the standard clearances specified by Transport Canada for all tracks owned or operated on by a railway company. No maintenance road is required. See RFP Addendum #2.
