Enquiry
Section 1.16.3.3.6 part q) requires that the Design-Builder submit “A description and elevation drawing showing the proposed aesthetic scheme of the bridge.” Section 2.4.8.5 “Aesthetics” requires that bridges be designed in accordance with the Aesthetic Guidelines for Bridges using a “Level 2 – Medium” classification. For a Level 2 Classification the Aesthetic Guidelines for Bridges (2004) states that Ministry Bridge Aesthetic Evaluation Group (MBAEG) approval is optional at the discretion of the Ministry Project Manager. In addition, p. 1-4 of the Guidelines states that the requirements are not binding and “should be considered flexible, not rigid”. Based on the requirements above there are no specific aesthetic treatments for the bridges on this Project. If this statement is correct, please clarify if a separate drawing is required showing a proposed aesthetic scheme. Please also confirm if any MBAEG approvals are required after Project Award.

Response
The bridges shall be designed in accordance with the Aesthetic Guidelines for Bridges using a “Level 2 –Medium” classification as per the RFP requirements. The Design Builder is required to submit a drawing showing the proposed aesthetic features for each bridge. Approval from Ministry Bridge Aesthetic Evaluation Group is not required, but approval is required from Ministry Central Region Engineering Office for each bridge. This will be clarified in RFP - Addendum 2.
